about

Inspiration behind the song:

I visited Boothill Graveyard in elementary school and while there read an epitaph that said "Here lies George Johnson hung by mistake. He was right we was wrong we strung him up and now he's gone". That epitaph stuck with me for years and eventually I wrote this song on my version of what might have happened that day.

lyrics

(Verse)
It was on a misty morning day
They rode up and took George away
Didn’t listen to his cries or pleas
Only one thought was on their mind
A hanging is what there’d be tonight

(Chorus)
They strung him up and cut him down
Found out what he said was true
The deed was done the price was paid
There was nothing they could do
But leave a horseshoe on his grave
To give him luck along the way

(Verse)
Found guilty before his trial came
There was nothing else left to say
Yelled his innocence out anyways
The words hung empty in the air
As he was dragged into the street

(Chorus)
They strung him up and cut him down
Found out what he said was true
The deed was done the price was paid
There was nothing they could do
But leave a horseshoe on his grave
To give him luck along the way

(Verse)
His fate hung right in front of his eyes
He mouthed I love you to his wife
Last rites were said the hood slipped on
A blameless heart it beat its last
another confessed to the crime

(Chorus)
They strung him up and cut him down
Found out what he said was true
The deed was done the price was paid
There was nothing they could do
But leave a horseshoe on his grave
To give him luck along the way

(Chorus)
They strung him up and cut him down
Found out what he said was true
The deed was done the price was paid
There was nothing they could do
But leave a horseshoe on his grave
To give him luck along the way
